Two months ago we bought the latest release of Dell Notebooks, its the Dell Inpiron I-1420. Since its Dell and it’s cheaper compared to other brands [i.e. HP, Lenovo, etc. ] we decided to stick with Dell. And now, I’m hearing so many negative news about the Inspiron series of Dell notebooks.
I remember the first time I told my friend [who is also working with Dell] that I already bought a laptop. I was shocked when he told me that the first series of Dell Inspiron batteries are exploding due to overheat. And so I checked the internet if its true and if the series the we bought have the same battery. And yes, its true. The first series of Dell Inspiron have defect on their batteries and exploding. Good thing that ours don’t belong on that series. [sigh] And now, another negative news bothers me again. A friend surprise me with this news.
Excerpt from the news:
Lots of Nvidia Laptop Graphics Cards Are Overheating, Dying
Apparently some previous-gen Nvidia graphics cards that shipped in “significant quantities” of notebooks are defective, built and packaged with ”weak” materials that are leading to them to overheat and fail at a “higher-than-normal” rate. Enough are bad that Nvidia is taking a $150-$200 million hit on its earnings for the quarter. Do you have one of these cards?
Nvidia doesn’t say which cards are affected, but it seems to be ones in the 8M series (which are now previous gen). The fix—a new driver that kicks in the cooling fans sooner, rather than later—is being distributed direct to notebook makers. So, if you’ve got a new Nvidia driver waiting for you from Dell or whoever made your laptop, congrats, you win! [WSJ, PC World]
I don’t know if the one that I have is defective. Because Nvidia didn’t confirm the lists of which cards are affected, but they speculates that it is on the 8M series, that makes my notebook be a victim on the issue.
But I still don’t believe it, cause as of now, everything is working perfectly fine and it is not overheating or something.
But I still need to research and verify if my driver should be updated for fix as what the news says. Below is the specs of my laptop. Feel free to add a comment if you are aware of this issue.
